Island Waters Flyfishers

Our club was originally established in 1985 as a non-profit club by a group who simply enjoyed fishing together, and whose hope and purpose it was to engage others and to promote and facilitate fly-fishing and comradery in this area.

Upcoming Club Activities

Westwood Lake Beach Casting

Casting at Westwood is over for the season. Hopefully your rods are ready  It is now time to get out and fish.  However, I still go to Westwood and go casting often a couple of times a week.  So, if want to join me email me at mrdepka@gmail.com and we can arrange a time to meet.  It could be last minute because half the time I go to westwood it is either raining or to windy.

Kissinger Lake Fishout

Each May, a hardy band of club members ventures past Youbou to this quiet little lake with a history intertwined with our own “Basher” Bob Kissinger—who, if properly encouraged, can provide both historical context and editorial embellishment around the campfire.   Mark your calendars for May 9th–17th, be ready when reservations open March 1st (that’s tomorrow!) and prepare for good fishing, better company and at least one story that improves noticeably with each retelling.   What you can expect:

  • Happy Hours around a crackling campfire
  • One grand group Evening BBQ (salads and sides shared; everyone handles their own grill duties)
  • BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverages—and perhaps your best fish tale)

As for the fishing? Kissinger remains reliably generous, stocked with 750 rainbow trout each Spring and Fall. Reports suggest excellent action, though as always, the trout reserve the right to review our presentations with quiet skepticism.   If you have questions about this event Jenny is our subject matter expert. Feel free to reach out to her at: phantomcreek313@gmail.com

Fly Fishing Introduction Course

This Years course will begin on April 15 at Beban Park Recreation Complex at 7-9 pm.   It will consist of three Wednesday evening sessions, followed by a practice session on Westwood Lake on May 2 from 10 AM to 12 PM.   The lead instructor for this year will be Ryan Nugent, assisted by Chris and Andre.   Information regarding the course will appear in the spring activity guide put out by parks and rec. In addition, several posters will be put up around the city at sporting goods locations.   Thank you to all those who came forward to put on this course once again for 2026.

Sincerely, Bill Croft
